Module summary

The module provides the opportunity for students to undertake a piece of independent research and writing on a topic of their choosing. It further develops their skills in research design, data collection and analysis, literature searching and reviewing, and academic writing.

Objectives

Students should achieve the following

- develop a research proposal
- undertake an independent piece of original research, analysis and writing
- present their research to a peer group
- learn to manage their own time and project to suit their needs and research programme
- successfully use techniques introduced in the programme in an applied manner
- demonstrate that they can produce a highly professional piece of work

These objectives are supported by lectures and workshops, which deliver generic guidance on the dissertation process, and mentor-led meetings, which provide bespoke advice and support on individual projects.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:

SSLO1: Plan and design a piece of original geographical research.
SSLO2: Apply an advanced range of quantitative, qualitative, visualisation, geospatial, numerical, or computational skills as appropriate for the research.
SSLO3: Collect, interpret, and synthesise different types of quantitative and/or qualitative primary and/or secondary data.
SSLO4: Communicate effectively the findings of the original research.
